I was light on my feet as I dropped to the ground outside of the academy’s wards. At least the demons weren’t running around the campus. There were too many children there.

Remy was waiting on me. We took in the quiet woods.

“There are over a hundred demons hunting the woods. They were forced to run,” Remy said.

“Why would they have come out to meet them?”

“Because they were trying to protect the ones inside the wards.”

“Go dark,” I told Remy.

A shadow above us made us flinch until we realized it was the twins. Their massive wings were almost silent as they landed on the ground beside us. Sandalphon stood Hannah on her feet.

Hannah, like an Amazon warrior, cracked her neck and said, “I’ll cut right through the middle of the woods.”

Nodding, I said, “I’ll take the left.”

Completely invisible from demons, Remy said, “I’ll go right.”

The twins didn’t state where they would be as they silently took to the sky. The three of us gave each other a nod before we broke off into a run, knowing this would probably be our last night. We were outnumbered. There was no way we could defeat this many demons.

A group of demons were in front of me, combing the area, looking for Ezra, Trev, and Luna.

Feeling connected with the ground, I let my powers rise. I watched as they tripped over roots and foliage as my power from Ariel lashed out at them. Vines and roots did their best to snare their ankles, completely taking the demons by surprise. They were nothing but captors, and my plants and trees kept their attention.

I quickly made the rounds. Not ever getting close, I let my power fling toward them as I commanded their death. When the eighth one hit the ground, I moved deeper in the woods. Eight dead demons was great, but we were still way outnumbered.

A sound to the right of me had me flinching. I watched in equal parts fascination and horror as Remy took three demons down like bowling pins, screaming, “Who’s your daddy?” before disappearing again. So much for stealth mode.

I stepped over a dead demon as I skirted the outside of the woods. There was a commotion up ahead that had me picking up the pace.

Trev was battling too many demons to count. I watched in amazement as he moved at a speed that was hard to track. He dipped, ducked, and dodged as he shoved his power into them. One by one, they fell.

Somehow knowing I was there, he said, “I’ve got this. Go check on my brother and Luna.”

Without looking, I threw my power at a demon that was moving toward me before I went deeper into the woods. I encountered a few demons along the way, but so far, I didn’t feel drained. If anything, I felt energized.

A scream broke the silence of the woods, and I took off running toward that one plea for help.

Toward the center of the woods, Hannah, Remy, and Ezra were back to back as they fought a hoard of demons.
